□ Name: Giancarlo Bourbon del Monte

□ Series: Lucky Dog 1
□ Canon point: Soon after escaping from prison, in the visual novel. Since he’s the protagonist and the story varies depending on player choices, specific choices will be referenced in the history, but basically following the beginning of the Bernardo route.
□ History: Born in 1907, Gian’s personal understanding of his history is that his parents were killed when he was very young. He has a ring of his mother’s that he wears around his neck, that always manages to come back to him even if he loses it. He lived with a relative after their deaths, and then at an orphanage. While there, he wasn’t bullied and didn’t go hungry, and while he talks about the Abbess there being a hardass, he also calls her Mamma and cares about her. It is revealed later (though not necessarily to him) that he is the illegitimate son of the Mafia boss Alessandro del Salto. Gian himself doesn’t know this, but it does affect his life in a lot of ways.

Gian refers to himself as having gone from a snotnosed brat to a full-on delinquent, and at the age of 16 he became involved with the CR:5, the local Mafia in the city of Daivan where he lived. (Daivan is mentioned to be on the east coast of the US, but a more specific location isn’t given.) The CR:5 itself is basically a rather modern - for the time period - name for the Tuscanini family, and is called such because of having five capos or captains. These captains are ruled over by boss Alessandro del Salto, and a board of other older administrative figures also holds great power in the organization.

Despite not having any idea why, Gian is immediately treated very well among the “old grampas” of the family. He is known to be a favorite of the oldest and highest ranking of the five capos, an old man named Cavalli, and finds himself under the wing of a man named Bernardo who is about six years older than himself.

Gian’s actual job within the mafia isn’t particularly glamorous. He mentions doing a lot of errands and relaying of orders, the type of things usually done by young people. There’s a brief mention of him having at one point sold watches (some of which were knockoffs) and he’s been in his share of fistfights and other minor violence. He has good luck at the races when he chooses to play, but isn’t involved enough in this to have it be considered “his racket” or anything.

What Gian does turn out to be very talented at, however, is breaking out of jail. He’s been in and out of the joint quite a few times, and considers it something of a hobby or game. Figuring out the best way to break out under specific conditions is a fun challenge for him, and he’s spent more time focused on this than any of the rest of the Mafia business during his time with the CR:5. He’s often given messages to get into prison and then told to bring responses back when he escapes. Aside from following orders when given, his choices about staying in prison or breaking out seem to be largely based on when he gets bored or tired of the crummy food.

The main story of the game starts when Gian is 25 and once again in the big house. He receives a letter from the boss with some very shocking news: Cavalli is stepping down as capo and naming Gian as his successor. Since the four other capo have all been currently incarcerated, this means that the entire set of CR:5 captains is currently in prison, at the same place and time. Gian’s job now is to break them all out, and if he succeeds, boss Alessandro del Salto will give up his own position, making Gian the head boss of the CR:5.

This all comes out of nowhere for Gian, to be told that he’s going to from a non-ranking member of the family to the boss of the whole thing for pulling off one jailbreak. The entire fate of the CR:5 is on the line, however, since having so much of its administration out of play has made the organization extremely vulnerable. A gang known as the Gravediggers has been working in Daivan, and despite a previous truce between the two organizations, the Gravediggers (GD) seem to be trying to wipe CR:5 from the face of the city.

The next few days are filled with small individual decisions to be made: who to go to for information, what route to choose for the jailbreak, and how and when to proceed. Further complicating the matter of having to break five people out of jail - Gian has always been alone! - are issues like having to forge relationships with the other captains and having to face opposition from the GD members within the prison. Further stress is put on him by an impending transfer for Giulio, the captain in for murder who is considered the most dangerous of the crew. This means that Gian is working on a very tight schedule to make and enact a plan.

(Warning for rape fantasy and sex between inmate and guard): A guard, Lloyd, who is known to be something of a pervert and flirts with Gian, finds out that he has been promoted to a captain of the CR:5. This increases Lloyd’s interest because he has a fantasy of being gang-raped by mafia captains, and having all five captains of the same organization within the walls of the prison tempts him to act on that fantasy. Gian agrees in order to later be able to call in a favor from Lloyd to facilitate the jailbreak. The actual act is rather cut-and-dry: while Gian calls together the other four captains, they wind up only watching while Gian fucks Lloyd, who plays up the rape-fantasy despite being the only person doing so. They’re caught by another guard before Lloyd can protest that no one else is taking a turn or insist on a second round, but he agrees that he and Gian are now “friends” anyway.

On the day of the jailbreak, Gian breaks himself out of his cell after lockdown, then goes off to collect the four other captains. The locks to their cells are picked, and then he leads them in the direction of a cell that connects to a secret tunnel. Lloyd catches them on the way there, but agrees to let them go. They tie him up for appearance’s sake and then get on their way. The inmate in the cell they are using to escape has already been bought off for the sake of his family outside, and they manage to get out into the tunnel without any further problems.

Inside the tunnel is a bit of a different story. While it had been used to bring goods before, Gian himself has only walked the length of it and returned, and he hasn’t had time to scope it out again recently. The tunnel gets narrower as it goes on, and just as they’re leaving, collapses somewhat. Giulio is briefly believed to be lost, but makes his way out with no major injuries.

Now that they’re out of the prison, the next real struggle is getting to the transportation that has been arranged through Bernardo’s lawyer. That proves to be a bit of a problem as well, since the car that is supposed to pick them up never arrives. The intrepid group of escapees winds up stealing the warden’s car instead, hightailing it away from the prison in a much fancier ride than planned.

From there, things continue to go awry. The whole escape turns into a push-and-pull between actual betrayals within the organization and Gian’s luck, plus some quick thinking from the other captains. Gian checks in with Bernardo, who is rather shaken up due to a fear of being buried alive that comes from a previous bad prison experience, while the rest of the crew looks around for supplies and a place to rest. They wind up staying in an unfurnished cabin in the forest for the night, during which time there’s a bit of coming down from the stressful situation. The stressed-out Bernardo worries Gian a bit cuddling up to him, but sleep is had anyway.

The next day, the bumbling captains find what they think is their first real female contact out of prison, only to discover the woman they’re all ogling while she bathes is actually a man and go on their way without the poor androgynous fellow ever being aware he was being watched. They head to the small town of Bowick in order to steal some supplies, but Ivan - the youngest of the captains - winds up being spotted, which inspires Bernardo to come up with a truly ridiculous cover story for their prison-striped clothing and sudden appearance.

The cover story of being performers who ran out of gas on the way through town leads to a rather surreal night of revelry as the group happens to have stumbled on a festival happening in Bowick. Guilio throws knives, the whole group sings and plays instruments, and overall they make merry all over the place with villagers who are too drunk and caught up in the moment to truly realize that the “escaped convict act” is really the truth.

One old woman who catches them talking about what they’ve gotten away with on the way out of town turns out not to be so lucky, however. Gian orders her silenced immediately, and Giulio brutally carries out the order in an instant. After that bloody scene, they head back to their cabin for the night, with a plan to head out in the morning.

But just as Gian is settling down to attempt sleep with his friend Bernardo trying to use him for a snuggle pillow for the second time since leaving prison…

It’s time to wake up for Orientation!

□ Personality: Gian’s “luck” is one of the biggest driving factors of his personality. He’s known within the CR:5 as the “Lucky Dog”, and there are a lot of things that are just easier for him than they would be for a normal person. He survives a rather bad car accident completely unharmed, gets his mother’s ring back no matter how many times he loses it, has never gotten a girl pregnant, and has such good luck at the races that other people flocking to imitate his bets screws up the odds. Every time something goes horribly wrong, his luck somehow pulls him through it.

This has had some rather interesting effects on his personality. Because he’s used to relying on his luck, there are a lot of things that Gian doesn’t really take all that seriously. He’s been involved with the mafia for several years, but he doesn’t run his own racket or have anyone who reports to him before being promoted to captain, and the time spent hopping in and out of jail is treated very much like a game or a series of rather interesting vacations. While Gian is clearly aware of the possibilities of violence in prison, he seems to hold little fear of it, and is quite comfortable and friendly with most people there.

He is, in fact, friendly with a great many people. He holds affection for the people at the orphanage where he grew up despite a bit of whining about the Abbess, is quite fond of some of the older generation of the family, and casually approaches most people he meets as if he expects to befriend them. When he’s given the task of taking over as captain, the only one of the current captains that he knows well is Bernardo, and they’re men who have been above him in rank and are now expected to listen to his orders. This leads to quite a bit of focus on finding out what makes them tick and how to bring them in line, and he has a different approach for each of the four captains.

If one were to meet him on the street, hardened criminal would in no way be the impression he’d give off. While he does like the occasional smoke or drink, he also chews gum almost constantly, requests ice cream when asked what he’d like brought back to him when scrounging for supplies, and can’t be bothered to carry a gun most of the time despite owning one. Unlike most of his mafia counterparts, he doesn’t care about things like appearances and hygiene, and has to be harassed into baths and nice clothing.

There are, however, things that Gian does take quite seriously. He sees the difference between the CR:5 and gangs like the Gravediggers as a very important distinction, since the family has a code of honor that includes less random violence, more protection of the citizens of the city, and a lot of positive community involvement.

While he may flounder about a lot when not under pressure, he can also adapt quickly and make decisions when it’s necessary. He manages to pull off a jailbreak more impressive than any he’d done before in a short period of time with a lot of pressure on him, despite plans constantly having to change because of a betrayal happening back home. As the story progresses (past the canon point he’s being played from here) he continues to show a great amount of flexibility, though he also exhibits a certain amount of gullibility and recklessness.

He may not be the most motivated or ambitious individual, but his choice as successor - despite being potentially motivated by personal reasons - makes more sense as the story goes on, as Gian shows himself to be something of a natural leader. Despite a lot of different personalities to work with, he manages to attract and hold the loyalty of the men under him, regardless of which love-interest route is taken in the game.

□ Age: 25
□ Gender: male
□ Appearance: At 5’10” and 128 lbs, Gian is pretty much right at the bottom of a normal weight range. He has blond hair and gold eyes, and is capable of a great many smiles and smirks that beg for a punch to the face. His CR:5 tattoo is on the left side of his chest, right at the bottom of his collarbone.

□ Abilities/Powers: Gian’s luck is the most obvious power or skill that he has. It’s treated in the game as both something obviously beyond the norm and as a game mechanic that fluctuates as you go through the game. It is, however, rather difficult to quantify since he doesn’t use it intentionally and it mostly means he scrapes through situations that are dangerous or unlikely. It’s also not clear in some cases whether it was luck or skill that brought him through a situation, especially when things like dealing with people are involved.

He’s very observant, has great memorization skills, and is excellent at reading people. This means that Gian is quite talented at finding the allies he needs, gathering information, and utilizing miniscule details like expressions and body language to read a situation and decide on the right course of action. There are many times throughout the story (and side stories published separately) where something put down to his luck by an observer was really a matter of utilizing these skills. (A specific example from a side story involves telling which of several coins is really a priceless antique by the reaction of the owner when Gian throws each one in the air.)

Physically, Gian is pretty good in a fight, having been in his share of brawls. He can use a gun but doesn’t always carry one on his person, and is often equipped last-minute when going into dangerous situations. Hand-to-hand and melee weapons are also within his range of experience. He is not, however, a one-man army or primarily a soldier, but he does survive fights with multiple opponents, and is capable of killing.

His other skills pertinent to his chosen career path are mostly related to being an escape artist. He can pick locks like it’s nothing, find the best places and times to make a break for it, plan elaborate routes, schedules and fallback plans. He’s great at thinking on his feet, flexible, and able to keep going forward and try something different if a plan fails. He’s also quite good at surviving inside the institutions up to that point, making him something of a blackmarket whiz: it doesn’t take him long to find out who to go to for what, who to avoid, and which way the wind blows.

□ Personal Items: A gold ring on a chain that belonged to his mother, bubblegum, cigarettes, a Luger P08, and a few suits to round it out.
